The Annual Literary Desserts Party

 

The Annual Literary Desserts Party brought the Literature Department’s MA and MFA students together at the home of MFA faculty member Rachel Louise Snyder. Last Saturday evening, students and faculty joined in celebrating the new semester by gorging themselves on fried chicken, carrots and hummus, sub sandwiches, and, of course, punny desserts.

A panel composed of faculty members and three shrewd guest judges of elementary- and middle-school ages rated desserts within three categories: Best Appearance, Best Pun, and Best Taste. The competition was tough this year, with entries such as “Finnegan’s Cake,” “Eton Mess of D’Urbervilles,” “Hedda Cobbler,” and “Elizabeth Barrett Brownies.”

First-year MFA student Yohanca Delgado won the award for Best Pun for her dessert, “A Confederacy of Buntses.” Second-year MA student Zeynep won the Best Appearance category for her dessert, “Pie and Prejudice.” Finally, first-year MFA student Derrick Jefferson won the first place prize (and a pretty rockin’ crown) for Best Taste with his dessert, “For Whom the Bell Tortes.”

Students and faculty left the party with full bellies and fuller hearts, proving once again that the Annual Literary Desserts Party is the best way to kick off a new school year.
